Over 1200 Tamils from across Australia gathered in front of their national parliament on Monday, May 29, to raise the voices in concert with the global protest campaign organised by the Tamil Diaspora. Between 10am and 2pm, the people gathered were addressed by parliamentarians from all sides of Australian politics, religious dignitaries, people who had been to the homelands and many more. The parliamentarians expressed their conviction that the gathering had conveyed the level of support amongst the Diaspora for the Tamil cause. Some parliamentarians undertook to convey this message of support to the rest of the politicians.

Australian Parliamentarians, who were present in Canberra as the parliament was in session, addressed the gathering. Among those who spoke were John Murphy MP, Laurie Ferguson MP and Louise Markus MP. Apologies were received from Kate Ellis MP and Bob McMullan MP. A supportive message from Senator Kerry Nettle was also read out.

Religious dignitaries also addressed the large crowd. The Catholic Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn, Pat Powell, a Minister of the Wesley Uniting Church, Rev George Henderson and Hindu priest, Surech Iyer all spoke. Others including Bishop Browning, Anglican Bishop of Canberra, sent their apologies.

The main theme of the protest was a call on the Sri Lankan military to get out of the Tamil homeland. Recent killings of civilians allegedly by the Sri Lankan military, including the massacre of a family of four in Allaipiddy and the bombing of civilian centres around Muttur town, were condemned by the crowd.

Others to address the gathering included Dr Brian Senewiratne, Mr Ana Pararajasingham, Mr Thanapalasingham and Dr Victor Rajakulendran. Several others also spoke, including a number of youths who had first hand experience of life in the Tamil homelands.

Of note was a feature display depicting a number of incidents that have recently occurred in Tamil areas. The killing of Joseph Pararajasingham MP, the four bodies of the family in Allaipiddy who were shot in their sleep, the man from Allaipiddy who was shot as he pleaded for his life and the discovery of the body of journalist Taraki, Dharmaretnam Sivaram, were all depicted. Another display, representing the international community's reaction to the Sri Lankan government, showed the three monkeys, who see no evil, hear no evil and say no evil.

Delegations from the gathering approached the embassies of other countries and the offices of the Prime Minister of Australia and the Leader of the Opposition and handed over a memorandum expressing the views of the Tamil community in Australia.

Tamils from a number of Australian states gathered opposite Parliament House in the national capital, Canberra to share their message of solidarity with others in Australia and across the Diaspora. People had travelled from Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales to join people resident in the Australian Capital Territory in the protest. Of significance was the large number of young people who made the effort to join in the protest.

இலங்கையின் வடக்கு-கிழக்கில் தமிழர் தாயகத்தில் தொடர்ச்சியாக நடைபெற்று வரும் தமிழ் மக்கள் படுகொலைகளை கண்டித்தும் இந்த வன்முறைகள் தொடர்பாக சிறிலங்கா அரசை சர்வதே சமூகம் கண்டனம் செய்ய வலியுறுத்தியும் 'உரிமைக்குரல்" எழுச்சி ஒன்றுகூடல் நிகழ்வு இன்று திங்கட்கிழமை (29.05.06) அவுஸ்திரேலியாவில் பேரெழுச்சியுடன் நடைபெற்றது.

அவுஸ்திரேலியாவின் தலைநகர் கன்பராவில் அமைந்துள்ள நடுவன் அரசின் நாடாளுமன்ற கட்டடத்துக்கு முன்பாக ஒன்றுபட்ட கடலென திரண்ட தமிழ் மக்கள் அவுஸ்திரேலியாவே! தமிழ் மக்களை காப்பாற்று! என எழுப்பிய முழக்கம் வானைக் கிழித்தது.

குறுகிய கால ஏற்பாட்டுடன் ஒழுங்கு செய்யப்பட்ட நிகழ்வாயிருந்த போதும் அவுஸ்திரேலியாவின் பல மாநிலங்களிலுமிருந்தும் ஆயிரத்திற்கும் மேற்பட்ட மக்கள் பயணச் சிரமங்களையும் பாராது தலைநகரில் கடலெனத் திரண்டனர்.

ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டபடி காலை 10 மணிக்கு முன்னரே நாடாளுமன்ற கட்டட முன்றலில் கூடிய மக்கள் தொகை நேரம் செல்ல செல்ல கூடிக்கொண்டே சென்றது.

நிகழ்வில் திரண்ட இளையோர் ஒன்றுகூடலுக்கு முன்பாக சர்வதேச சமூகத்தின் தற்போதைய நிலையையும் சிறிலங்கா அரசின் படுகொலைகளையும் அதனால் தமிழ்மக்கள் படும் துயரங்களையும் வெளிப்படுத்தும் மௌன அரங்கு ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டிருந்தது.

இந்த ஓன்று கூடலில் கலந்துகெண்ட அனைவரது கைகளிலும் தமிழ் மக்களின் துன்பங்களை எடுத்துரைக்கும் பதாகைகள் காணப்பட்டன.

அவுஸ்திரேலிய அரசே! தமிழ் மக்களுக்கு நீதியைப் பெற்றுக்கொடு!!
சிறிலங்கா இராணுவமே! படுகொலைகளை நிறுத்து!!
இரண்டு மாதங்களில் 174 தமிழ்மக்கள் படுகொலை!
சிறிலங்கா இராணுவமே! தமிழரின் தாயகத்தை விட்டு வெளியேறு!!

போன்ற உணர்ச்சி பொங்கும் உண்மை நிலைகளை வெளிப்படுத்துகிற் முழக்கங்களைத் தாங்கிய பதாகைககளை சிறியோர் முதல் பெரியோர் வரை அனைவரும் தாங்கியிருந்தனர்.

மழலைகள் கூட தம் கைகளில் கறுப்பு கொடிகளை தாங்கிய வண்ணம் ஒன்றுகூடலில் குளிரென்றும் பாராமல் நின்றுகொண்டிருந்த காட்சி உள்ளத்தை உருக்கியது.

இந்நிகழ்வில் சிறிலங்காவின் முன்னாள் அரச தலைவர் சந்திரிகா குமாரதுங்கவின் உறவினரும் ஈழத் தமிழர்களின் உரிமைப் போராட்டத்துக்கு தொடர்ந்து தீவிர ஆதரவுப்பணி புரிந்து வருபவருமான மருத்துவர் கலாநிதி பிறயன் செனிவிரட்ன உரையாற்றினார்.

அவுஸ்திரேலிய நாடாளுமன்றின் லிபரல் மற்றும் தொழிலாளர் கட்சிகளை சேர்ந்த உறுப்பினர்களும் இந்த ஒன்று கூடலில் கலந்கொண்டு உரையாற்றினர்.

தமிழ்மக்களுக்கு எதிராக மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டு வரும் படுகொலைகளை கண்டித்து அதன் வேதனையை தாங்களும் உணர்வதாக கூறிய அவர்கள், அவுஸ்திரேலிய அரசு இது போன்ற விடயங்களில் தலையிடுவதில்லை என்பது சுட்டிகாட்டி அதற்கு தமது கண்டனத்தையும் தெரிவித்தனர்.
