 "The idea of a `Resistance Literature' was first mooted to me by Barbara Harlow, the author of Resistance Literature (Metheun, 1987, New York & London). Sections I and II of this paper owe much to this text and to that well known classic, Fanon's "The Wretched of the Earth". Much of the Tamil Resistance poetry I have translated, somewhat freely, may be found in "Maranuthul Vazhvum" (We Live in Death), an anthology of Tamil Eelam resistance poetry edited by Cheran, Jesurasa and Padmanaba lyer. Solaikili's poems have been published, with an introduction by Nuhman, by Vyugam ("Ettavathu Naragam ' - Eighth Hell - Vyugam. 1988, Batticaloa). I am deeply thankful to S.V.
