A three-day Tamil Literary Festival commenced in Trincomalee on 28 December 2002 with pomp and pageantry with a two km long cultural pageant depicting Tamil literary values progressed from the office of the provincial ministry of education to the venue of the festival Trincomalee St.Joseph's College through main street and Thirugnanasampanthar Street.

A statue of Tamil Annai (Mother Tamil) lead the cultural pageant. Students dressed as celebrated Tamil poets and literary greats of the past, Kambar, Avvaiyar, Barathi, Barathithasan, Arumuganavalar, Swami Vipulananda, Fr.Thaninayagam, Somasunthara Pulavar and Siththi Lebbe marched as part of the cultural procession.... LTTE's Trincomalee district political head Mr.Tilak and Trincomalee town political head Mr. Rajesh also participated in the inaugural event....
Festival focusses on revival of Cultural, Literary values

"Mass displacement during the period of war has ruined the education and cultural values of Tamils in northeast. Two vital elements are needed for a race to maintain its identity. One is language, its literary values, and the other is the cultural values and the way of life," said Mr.Sivanandan, Director of Education of the Provincial Ministry of Education, presiding over the first day evening session of the Tamil Literary Festival held in Trincomalee. "Thousands of internally displaced now in refugee camps are slowly returning to their villages. In addition to helping them resettle, it is also the opportune moment for educational authorities to take steps to prepare plans to restore their cultural values and to help improve proficiency in their language..Tamil literary festivals should be held in every district in the northeast province to rejuvenate the spirit of leading a life firmly grounded on their vibrant cultural values.."
NE Tamil festival concludes with awards to Tamil scholars
The three-day Tamil Literary Festival of the North East provincial Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs concluded with the conferring of Governor's Awards to eight Tamil scholars and Literary Awards to seventeen Tamil authors.
Of the nominated eight Tamil scholars, except for Professor S.Sivasegaram and Professor M.A.Nuhuman the others Professor S.Sivasamy, Professor S.Mounaguru, Mr.Vel Anandan, George Chandrasekaran, Sitpi Saravanapavan and Pashaiyoor Thevathasan, attended the event and accepted the Governor's Awards. Those given the Literary awards included Messrs S.Pathmanathan, A.Nishanthan, Kandiah Sri Ganeshan, P.Sivapalan, Mohamed Sammem, Gnanamuthu Pilendran, Manikkam Nadarajasuntharam, Pandit K.Sachchithanandan, Ms Angiayan Kailasanathan and V.N.S.Uthayaschandran.
