Note: My school years began
during the evening of Colonial Rule in Ceylon. Regardless of a foreign
educational policy, the then colonial government thought it fit and
appropriate to impart knowledge that proved beneficial to generations of
students. Along with subjects that had commercial value and convenience for
the Rulers, Tamil was also taught and made compulsory and
subjects such as Aaaththisoodi, Kontryventhan, Nalvali, Nanneri, etc. were
part of the syllabus in most primary classes. In these days of political
chicanery among the Tamils and Sinhalas,
it is an
effort in futility to write or talk about acceptable strategy to support
Tamil cause that will stop further bloodshed... Therefore until better
counsel prevails, I thought it best to interpret some of those Tamil Gems,
among others, that influenced my thoughts and actions in English. I hope
parents and guardians will bring this to the notice of their wards.
Introduce these great Tamil works through English initially, so that some
children will develop a hunger to know more about their roots and language.
They should not miss any opportunity that can be found until professional
help is available. I make no excuse for the quality of the interpretations
as I am doing it for the love of my language. I wish my Tamil and English
proficiency I developed over the years from my drawing room, could serve me
better to give the best.
