Over two thousand people, largely Tamils turned up outside the British Parliament on 23 July 2008 between 8 pm and 10 pm holding candles to mark their respect and remember the 3,000 Tamils who were slaughtered during Sri Lankan state pogrom, 25 years ago.

The Candle Light Vigil was organised by the British Tamils Forum in association with the Tamil Councillors & Associates. Age, religion, language or gender were no barrier. People from all walks of life had made the effort to participate.

Through a series of chain mobile texts and emails people were contacted since last Sunday to inform them of this candlelight vigil. To have reached over two thousand people in just over two days shows the feelings amongst the Tamil Diaspora in the UK who want to show their solidarity with their brothers and sisters back in Tamil Eelam and give expression to their own resolve to support the struggle of Tamil Eelam to be free.

Though the UK Parliament was in recess since 22 July for the summer vacation , a few members of Parliament from the main political parties were present at the vigil to express their solidarity. The current and former Chairmen of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Tamils (APPG – T) Hon Virendra Sharma MP and Hon Keith Vaz MP were accompanied by Hon Andrew Pelling MP and others.

The candlelight vigil was organised as part of a series of events to mark ‘Black July’ here in the UK. Starting with Pongu Thamil on 12 July, a photo exhibition depicting 60 years of oppression of Tamils in Sri Lanka within the British Parliament on 16 July.

Leaflets were handed out during the rush hour at various points such as outside tube stations to raise the awareness of the British Public to the continuous human rights violations carried out by the Government of Sri Lanka. [For more information visit: www.tamilsforum.com ]

பிரித்தானிய நாடாளுமன்ற சதுக்கத்தில் 83 கறுப்பு யூலையின் 25 வருட நினைவு சுமந்து, 23 ஆம் நாள் ஜூலை மாதம் புதன்கிழமை இரவு 8:00 மணி தொடக்கம் இரவு 10:00 மணி வரை மெழுகுவர்த்தி கவனயீர்ப்பு ஒன்றுகூடல் நடைபெற்றது.

மிகக்குறுகிய கால முன்னறிவித்தலிலும் 2 ஆயிரத்துக்கும் அதிகமான மக்கள் உணர்வெழுச்சியோடு கலந்து கொண்டனர்.

கைகளில் மெழுகுவர்த்தி தாங்கியும் தமக்கு காலம் காலமாக சிறிலங்கா அரசால் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்டு வரும் இனப்படுகொலைகளை வெளிப்படுத்தும் பதாகைகளை தாங்கியும் நின்றனர்.

சிறியவர்கள், இளையோர், முதியவர்கள் எனப்பலரும் வயது வேறுபாடின்றி நிகழ்வில் பங்குகொண்டனர்.

இடையில் றுந றுயவெ வுயஅடை நுநடயஅ என திரண்டிருந்த அனைவரும் ஒன்றாக கோசம் எழுப்பி இவற்றிற்கெல்லாம் முடிவு தமிழீழமே என்று பறைசாற்றினர்.

நாடாளுமன்ற விடுமுறை என்ற போதும் தமிழர்களுக்கான அனைத்து கட்சி நாடாளுமன்ற குழுத் தலைவர் விரேந்திர சர்மா, அதன் முன்னைய தலைவர் கீத்வாஸ் மற்றும் அன்ரூ பெலிங் போன்ற பிரித்தானிய நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர்கள் உட்பட பலரும் தமிழர்களின் நியாயமான கோரிக்கைகளுக்கு ஆதரவு தெரிவித்து நிகழ்வில் கலந்துகொண்டனர்.

நிகழ்வு நிறைவு பெறும் வரை இதுவரை காலமும் இடம்பெற்ற இனப்படுகொலைகளை ஆண்டு வாரியாக பட்டியலிட்டு இவற்றிற்கெல்லாம் தீர்வு தமிழீழமே, அதனை அனைத்துலகமும் அங்கீகரிக்க வேண்டுமென்ற கோரிக்கை அடங்கிய துண்டுப்பிரசுரங்கள் தமிழர் அல்லாதோருக்கு விநியோகிக்கப்பட்டன.

எமது மக்களுக்கு நிம்மதியான வாழ்வு கிட்டும் வரை தாம் ஓயப் போவதில்லையென்ற உண்ர்வு நிகழ்வில் கலந்து கொண்டோர் அனைவரிடமும் மேலோங்கி நின்றது.
