International Women's Day was observed in several parts of Tamil Eelam on 8 March 2006. Local women's organizations and Non-governmental organization participated in events held in Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu, Jaffna and Mannar.

Head Kilinochchi district Women's Organization, Ms Thevambikai presided an event held at the Kilinochchi Cultural Hall at 10 a.m.. Kilinochchi Deputy Political Head, Arul, lit the traditional lamp and Ms. Vasanthi, Officer in charge of Women's Arts and Cultural Organisation, hoisted the Thamileelam National flag before the beginning of the celebratons.

S.Pasupathipillai, Secretary of the Tamil National Resurgence Forum Kilinochchi district, Ms. Poovili, Head of Kilinochchi District Women's politcal wing spoke and Ms. Thamilvili, Deputy head of Women's political wing, gave the special address.

In another event held at the Centre for Women's Development and Rehabilitation (CWDR) at 2 p.m. presided by Head of CWDR, Ms Selvakumar, local women's organisations and NGOs presented tools and aid to selected women to assist in their self-employment efforts.

Oxfam Project Officer Mr. Theva donated 3 water pumps to be share by six women. Seventeen women from poverty-stricken families of Malayalapuram in the Kilinochchi district were issued Bank Books with money deposits of Rural Economic Development Bank.

45 self-employment oriented women selected from several villages in Kilinochchi district received 5000 rupees each from representatives of NGOs including Ms. Mildrid Mikkelsen representing Norweigian Forum for Women Development Centre (FOKUS), CWDR sources in Kilinochchi said.

Meanwhile, Vavuniya district Women's Development Rehabilitation Institution celebrated World Women's Day Wednesday in the Nedunkerny region presided by the CWDR Director of Vavuniya district Ms. T. Pathmavathy and attended by officials and representatives of several NGOs, LTTE, and Sri Lankan Government departments.

The three who won the first three places and the 35 women participants in the Marathon race organised by the Vavuniya CWDR received prizes and certificates.

Mannar event was organized by the Mannar Women's consortium and was presided by Ms Jessy Ariyaratnam, head of the Consortium.

Head if Mullaitivu district Women's association, Ms. Vanathi, presided the International Women's day celebrations held at the Cultural Hall in Puthukkudiyiruppu Wednesday, sources in Mullaitivu said.

In this event, Head of LTTE Women's Political Wing, Thamilini lit the ceremonial flame, and Head of LTTE's Puthukudiyiruppu Political Wing, Puhalarasan, hoisted the Tamileelam flag before the event.

President of Mullaitivu Peoples Consortium, Mr Shanmuganathan, Ms Subashini, S Subramaniyeswaran and Thamilin spoke at the event.
