இது தொடர்பாக விடுதலைப் புலிகளுக்கு நெருங்கிய வட்டாரங்களில் இருந்தும் வேறு தொடர்புகள் ஊடாகவும் 'புதினம்' சேகரித்த தகவல்களில் இருந்து தெரியவருவதாவது:

நேற்று முன்நாள் புதன்கிழமை பிற்பகல் அளவில் மலேசிய தலைநகர் கோலாலம்பூரில் 'மஜீத் இந்தியா' என்று குறிப்பிடப்படும் பகுதியில் உள்ள 'ரியூன்' (Tune Hotels) விடுதிக்கு ஒரு சந்திப்புக்காக சென்றிருந்தபோது செல்வராஜா பத்மநாதன் கடத்தப்பட்டுள்ளார்.

வெளிநாடு ஒன்றில் இருந்து அவரைச் சந்திப்பதற்காக மலேசியா சென்றிருந்த - தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் புலிகளின் அரசியல்துறைப் பொறுப்பாளர் பா. நடேசனின் சகோதரர் மற்றும் பா.நடேசனின் மகன் ஆகியோரைச் சந்திப்பதற்காகவே செல்வராஜா பத்மநாதன் அந்த விடுதிக்குச் சென்றிருந்தார்.

பிற்பகல் அளவில் - ஜலான் ரொன்கு அப்துல் ரஹ்மான் (Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman) வீதியில் இருக்கும் குறிப்பிட்ட அந்த 'ரியூன்' விடுதிக்குச் சென்ற செல்வராஜா பத்மநாதன், அவர்கள் தங்கியிருந்த அறையில் அவர்களுடன் உரையாடியிருக்கின்றார்.

பின்னர் - பிற்பகல் 2:00 மணியளவில் - தனக்கு வந்த ஒரு செல்லிடப்பேசி அழைப்பை ஏற்று தனிமையில் உரையாடுவதற்காக அந்த அறையை விட்டு வெளியே சென்ற அவர் திரும்ப வரவில்லை. அதன் பின்னரே அவர் கடத்தப்பட்டது உணரப்பட்டது.

கிடைக்கப்பெற்ற தகவல்களின்படி - செல்வராஜா பத்மநாதன் மலேசிய புலனாய்வுத்துறை அல்லது மலேசிய பாதுகாப்பு வட்டாரங்களின் ஒத்துழைப்புடன் சிறிலங்கா புலனாய்வுத்துறையினரால் கடத்தப்பட்டதாகவே குறிப்பு உணர்த்துகின்றன.

அதே வேளையில் வேறு ஒரு பெரிய வெளிநாட்டு உளவுத்துறையின் ஆசீர்வாதமும் அனுசரணையும் கூட இந்தக் கடத்தலுக்கு இருந்திருக்கலாம் என்ற சந்தேகமும் தமிழர் வட்டாரங்களில் நிலவுகின்றது.

இதே வேளையில் செல்வராஜா பத்மநாதன் தாய்லாந்தின் தலைநகர் பாங்கொக்கில் வைத்து கைது செய்யப்பட்டதாக சிறிலங்கா அரச வட்டாரங்கள் நேற்று கொழும்பில் தகவல்கள் வெளியிட்டுள்ளன.

இருந்த போதும் - இந்தக் கடத்தலுடன் மலேசிய பதுகாப்பு மற்றும் புலனாய்வு வட்டாரங்களுக்கு இருக்கும் தொடர்பை மறைத்து திசை திருப்பும் நோக்குடனேயே இவ்வாறு தகவல் வெளியிடப்படுகின்றது என்றும் கருதப்படுகின்றது.

இதே வேளையில் கொழும்பில் இருக்கும் 'புதினம்' செய்தியாளருக்கு கிடைத்த உறுதிப்படுத்தப்படாத தகவல்கள், செல்வராஜா பத்மநாதன் நேற்று வானூர்தி முலம் கொழும்புக்கு கொண்டுவரப்பட்டிருப்பதாக தெரிவிக்கின்றன.

The Tamil Tiger rebels' new leader, Selvarasa Pathmanathan, has been arrested in a south-east Asian country.

Sri Lanka's defence secretary told the BBC that Mr Pathmanathan, better known as KP, was arrested on Wednesday.

A military spokesman said the rebel leader had been brought to Sri Lanka and was being questioned.

The rebels have confirmed the arrest. Mr Pathmanathan became the leader of the remnants of the Tigers after their defeat in May by Sri Lankan forces. Earlier reports from Sri Lankan military officials suggested the arrest took place in Thailand, but Bangkok later denied them.

A pro-rebel website said Mr Pathmanathan was abducted from Kualalumpur, and blamed Sri Lankan and Malaysian intelligence for the disappeance of the LTTE leader  He was wanted on two Interpol warrants.

Earlier, Sri Lanka's Defence Minister, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, told the BBC that the new Tamil Tiger leader had been arrested, but he did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding his capture.

Mr Pathmanathan was widely believed to be running the rebels' arms and smuggling networks for years. But he took over the leadership of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) after the former head, Velupillai Prabhakaran, and his top commanders were killed during the military offensive in north-eastern Sri Lanka in May.

As the new rebel leader, Mr Pathmanathan said the LTTE had decided to silence their guns and would try non-violent methods to achieve their goal of a separate state for the Tamil minority. Analysts say his arrest has created a vacuum among the moderate elements within the LTTE supporters living overseas. Nevertheless, Mr Pathmanathan's arrest is a significant blow for the LTTE.

He is also wanted in India in connection with the assassination of the former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, by a suspected Tamil female suicide bomber, in 1991.

"The arrest of LTTE mastermind Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP has thwarted completely the possibilities of LTTE raising its ugly head again" Defence Secretary Mr. Rajapaksa was quoted as saying during an interview with the Sunday Observer commenting on the arrest of the LTTE arms dealer.

According to Secretary Defence, the arrest was a result of hard work done for nearly two months with the help of several countries. With his arrest any possibility of the now defunct terror outfit regrouping again has been thwarted, Mr. Rajapaksa was quoted as saying. According to Secretary Defence every detail was carefully monitored to take this 'prize catch'.

"Pathmanathan was busy reestablishing the LTTE. He even went to the extent of forming a `transnational' government. However, the timely and the prompt action made the arrest of KP imminent shattering all his future plans," Mr Rajapaksa said.

Commenting further on the arrest he said "Several countries rendered their support in arresting K. P. Therefore, the support of those countries was praiseworthy. The flawless international relations established by President Mahinda Rajapaksa played an important role in apprehending the LTTE `strong man".

"It is vital at this juncture to protect the details and other information relating to countries and the officials who had played their part in nabbing Pathmanathan," Mr. Rajapaksa was further quoted as saying said.

The Defence Secretary said, that the LTTE was considered one of the deadliest and elusive terrorist outfits in the world and now it has been rooted out not only in Sri Lanka but even globally following the arrest of K.P.

"The outside forces which helped the LTTE against the sovereignty of Sri Lanka will now learn a bitter lesson with the arrest of Pathmanathan," the Defence Secretary said.

செல்வராஜா பத்மநாதனின் பெயர் இன்ரர்போலின் தேடப்படுவோர் பட்டியலில் இடம்பெற்றுள்ளதாயின், அனைத்துலக அரசுகள் அவற்றின் துறைகளினால் மேற்கொள்ளப்படும் எவ்வகையான கைது நடவடிக்கைகளும் உள்நாட்டு சட்ட ஒழுங்கு நடைமுறைகளுக்கும் அனைத்துலக சட்ட ஒழுங்குகளுக்கும் அமைவாக மேற்கொள்ளப்பட வேண்டும் என்பதை நாம் தீர்க்கமாக நம்புகின்றோம்.

செல்வராஜா பத்மநாதன், சித்திரவதைகளுக்கு எதிரான சட்டமுறையின் மூன்றாம் சரத்துக்கு அமைய பாதுகாப்பு உரிமை உடையவர். அதன்படி எந்தவொரு நாட்டிலும் ஒருவர் சித்திரவதைக்கு உட்படுத்தப்படும் சாத்தியம் இருந்தால், அந்த நாட்டுக்கு அவர் எடுத்துச் செல்லப்படுதல் தடை செய்யப்படுகின்றது.

இந்த இடத்தில் அனைத்துலக நடைமுறைகள் தமிழர் விடயத்தில் மீளவும் சட்ட நியமங்களை மீறியதையே காண்கின்றோம்.

பத்மநாதன் சட்டங்கள் எதனையும் மீறியிருந்தால், சட்ட நியமங்களுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டு சூறையாடும் கூட்டங்கள், காடையர் மற்றும் குற்றச்செயல்களில் ஈடுபடும் குழுக்கள் போன்று இயங்கி அவரை சிறைப்பிடிப்பதற்குப் பதிலாக நாடு கடத்தலுக்கான ஆணையைப் பெற்று அவரைக் கையேற்பதே சரியான முறையாக இருந்திருக்கும்.

செல்வராஜா பத்மநாதன் தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் புலிகள் இயக்கத்தின் அரசியல் மீள் உருவாக்க முயற்சிகளில் மிகத் தீவிரமாக ஈடுபட்டிருந்தார் என்பதையும் தமிழ் மக்களின் சுயநிர்ணய உரிமைகளுக்கான போராட்டத்தினை அரசியல், இராஜதந்திர அணுகுமுறைகளை நோக்கி வழிநடத்திக் கொண்டிருந்தார் என்பதையும் குறிப்பிட விரும்புகின்றோம்.

இப்பணியில் அவர் பெரும் சவால்களை எதிர்கொண்டிருந்தபோதும் இலங்கைத்தீவில் தமிழர்களுக்கான நீதியான அரசியல் எதிர்காலம் நோக்கிய நகர்வினை நம்பிக்கையுடனும் தீவிர மன உறுதியுடனும் முன்னெடுத்து வந்தார்.

நாடு கடந்த தமிழீழ அரசினை மக்கள் வாக்களிப்பின் மூலம் உறுப்பினர்களைத் தெரிவு செய்வதற்கான அடிமட்டத்தில் இருந்து உருவாகும் ஒரு ஜனநாயக நிறுவனமாக ஏற்றுக்கொள்வதன் மூலம் தமிழீழ விடுதலைப் போராட்டத்துக்கு மக்கள் ஆட்சி வழியானதொரு தலைமைத்துவத்தை கட்டி எழுப்புவதை அவர் ஆதரித்தார்.

பத்மநாதனை வழிப்பறிக் கும்பலினது பாணியில் கைப்பற்றியவர்கள், புதிதாக தொடங்கப்பட்ட அரசியல் மீள் உருவாக்க முயற்சியை தடுக்கவே விரும்புகின்றனர். ஆயினும் தமிழீழ மக்களின் சுயநிர்ணய உரிமையை வென்றெடுப்பதற்கான தமிழீழ தேசிய செயற்திட்டம் ஒரு தனிமனிதனின் ஆற்றல் அர்பணிப்பில் மட்டும் தங்கியிருப்பதற்கு இல்லை என்பதால் எண்ணில் அடங்காத பற்று உறுதி மிக்க பலரது உழைப்பின் மூலம் இத்திட்டம் வெற்றி கிட்டும் வரை தொடரும் என்பது உறுதி.

பத்மநாதன் மலேசிய அதிகாரிகளின் உதவியுடன் கடத்தப்பட்டிருப்பின் அக்கடத்தல் தொடர்பான விபரங்களை வெளியிடுமாறு மலேசிய அரசினை உலகு எங்கும் வாழும் தமிழ் மக்கள் சார்பாக நாம் வேண்டுகின்றோம்.

மலேசிய அரசிடம் இது விடயத்தில் தகவல் ஏதும் இல்லை எனில் நடந்தேறிய இந்த சட்டவிரோத கடத்தல் தொடர்பான விசாரணைகளை மலேசிய அரசு முன்னெடுக்க வேண்டும் என நாம் உறுதியாக வேண்டி நிற்கின்றோம்.

பத்மநாதன் சிறிலங்கா அரசு கூறுவதுபோன்று கொழும்புக்கு கொண்டுசெல்லப்பட்டிருந்தால் அனைத்துலக நியமங்களுக்கு அமைய அவரது பாதுகாப்பினை உறுதிப்படுத்தவும் அவருக்கு வேண்டிய சட்ட அறிவுரைகளைப் பெறுவதற்கு உரிய வாய்ப்பினை ஏற்படுத்தவும் அனைத்துலக சமூகம் இதில் தலையிட வேண்டும் எனவும் நாம் அறைகூவல் விடுக்கின்றோம்.

சிறிலங்கா அரச ஏலவே மூன்று லட்சம் தமிழ் மக்களை நாசி முகாம் வகையிலான வதைமுகாம்களில் காலவரை இன்றி தடுத்து வைத்திருப்பதையும் இது விடயத்தில் கவனத்தில் கொண்டுவர விரும்புகின்றோம்.

பத்மநாதனின் உயிர்ப்பாதுகாப்பு தொடர்பாக அஞ்சுவது போலவே, இந்த மக்களின் பாதுகாப்பு தொடர்பாகவும் நாம் அஞ்சுகின்றோம்.

இதனால், இந்த மூன்று லட்சம் மக்களின் பரிதாப நிலைக்கு விரைவில் தீர்வு காண்பதிலும் பத்மநாதன் எல்லாவித அனைத்துலக விழுமியங்களுக்கு அமைய பாதுகாப்பினைப் பெறுவதையும் உறுதிப்படுத்துமாறு அனைததுலக சமூகத்தை வேண்டி நிற்கின்றோம்."

இவ்வாறு உருத்திரகுமாரன் தனது அறிக்கையில் மேலும் குறிப்பிட்டிருக்கின்றார்.
 

KP�s attempt to don the leadership mantle in a post-Prabakaran scenario was opposed by an influential Tiger cabal in the Diaspora. After protracted wrangling, a settlement was reached in July and KP assumed control of a revamped LTTE as �Thalaimai Seyalar� or chief secretary. Even as the ex-arms smuggler began consolidating his position, adversity struck in the form of his capture and transportation to Sri Lanka.

While there is no official version so far about how and where KP was arrested, many relevant details are available through diverse media sources. This has made it possible to piece together a picture of the incident.

The new LTTE chief, married to a Thai national, lived in suburban Bangkok. But he used to travel frequently to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to meet with various people. KP was in the Malaysian capital in August.

Around noon on August 5, he went to the �First Tune Hotels� at 316 Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman Road in the heart of Kuala Lumpur to meet two visitors from London. One of the British visitors was Balasingham Balendran, the younger brother of former LTTE political commissar Balasingham Mahendran alias Nadesan. The other person was Nadesan�s own son who had gone to London some years ago and was staying with his paternal uncle.

While chatting in the hotel room, around 2 p.m. KP received a call on his mobile phone. He went out of the room conversing. He did not return. Worried, Balendran and nephew searched for him. But there was no sign of KP�s vehicle, or its driver, Appu. Dayamohan, the friend who had called Pathmanathan, was also perturbed. KP had been talking to him when he heard a sudden �thud.� There was a commotion of sorts and KP�s phone went dead. Repeated calls by Dayamohan went unanswered as the mobile had been switched off.

News spread among the new LTTE chief�s friends and aides in Kuala Lumpur that something was amiss. When some of them went to the place KP was staying in Kuala Lumpur, they found only his daughter there. Significantly, the insulin and syringes used by KP, who was a diabetic, were in the room.

Comparing notes, KP�s colleagues and well-wishers were able to gauge the situation. Had the new LTTE leader been abducted or killed? From an LTTE perspective, the Sri Lankan officialdom was the prime suspect. But the hand of intelligence agencies of other countries was not ruled out.

Announcement

The suspense ended the following day, August 6, when news of KP having been taken to Colombo broke. Apparently he and Appu were transported to Bangkok from Kuala Lumpur and then taken to Colombo on a chartered flight. They arrived after nightfall at the Katunayake airport and were whisked away to an undisclosed location. All speculation about KP�s whereabouts ceased after the Cabinet spokesperson disclosed that he was in military custody and would be questioned.

In September 2007, there was much excitement in Sri Lanka when KP was detained by authorities in Thailand. It was expected that he would be deported to Sri Lanka or India. But the arrest was denied and KP was soon �free.� But this time it was different.

Two elements

Two factors played a significant role in the new development.

First, much pressure was exerted by Sri Lanka on Malaysia over KP. Taking the stance that he was living in Malaysia, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama made a request on May 29 to Malaysian Defence Minister Dr. Ahamd Zahid bin Hamidi YB Dato Seri to hand over KP to facilitate ongoing investigations into LTTE operations overseas. The appeal was made on the sidelines of the 8th Shangri-La Dialogue event held in Singapore in May 2009.

Secondly, Sri Lanka recently appointed Brigadier Udaya Perera as Deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia to meet the new threat posed by the LTTE. Subsequently, he was promoted Major-General. His main, yet unpublicised, assignment was �Operation KP.�

In the public eye

A puzzling aspect of the drama was Pathmanathan�s reckless disregard for safety. He had two warrants issued against him by Interpol, yet he was brazenly going about in public. He met with people openly, granted print, television, and radio interviews, wrote regularly in his own blog and engaged in telephone conversations on a global scale. This made him highly vulnerable as a target of law-enforcement officials.

The Sri Lankan government is extremely happy about the arrest. Any prospect of the residual LTTE having a resurgence has been effectively scuttled. Further interrogation of KP is likely to elicit important information about LTTE activity abroad.

President Rajapaksa�s reputation has received a further boost. Not only was Prabakaran killed, his successor too has been captured. But despite the buoyant mood in the country, the Rajapaksa government is not boasting about its achievement. There are valid reasons for this.

Aid from other countries

Though the details are scanty, there are sufficient grounds to believe that Sri Lanka, with the aid of �intelligence officials� from other countries, accomplished the feat of seizing and transporting KP from Kula Lumpur to Colombo. It is assumed that the exercise amounted to an �extraordinary rendition� on the lines of what the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency had been doing after 9/11. More details about �Operation KP� are likely to be revealed in the near future.

Excitement

Against this backdrop, the capture of Pathmanathan has caused a great deal of excitement. Colombo is sensitive to any negative publicity over the incident but it also wants to avoid any embarrassment to the countries that helped Sri Lanka in this matter.

Pathmanathan, known as Tharmalingam Shanmugam Kumaran in India, had been proclaimed a wanted offender by Interpol. This was based on two warrants issued by India and Sri Lanka. India wanted Interpol to apprehend KP for interrogation on charges of criminal conspiracy, arms smuggling, violation of Indian terrorist and explosives laws, and for questioning over the 1991 assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
