Bandula Jayasekara in Colombo, SLT 9.30 a.m Saturday 7 December -Political analyst and a former minister of the North/East provincial council Dayan Jayatilleka said today that there cannot be federalism in the North and the East with LTTE having a regular armed force and the LTTE should disband all their armed forces.
Jayatileke said " Last week's episode of the X-Files shown in Colombo was about magic and magicians, and in it, Fox Mulder learns the secret of the conjurer's art: misdirection. Divert the attention of the watcher by some gesture or motion, so that the trick can be performed.
On Thursday December 5th, LTTE conjurer Anton Balasingham and his assistant Prof. GL Pieris, performed their magic trick and pulled out an agreement on Federalism out of a hat. We shall be debating federalism, while the real action is elsewhere.
"Federalism plus a separate regular armed force (in the North-East), is NOT Federalism." Jayatilke said that the Sri Lankan stand must be federalism only if it is to a de-militarized and democratized NorthEast and federalism must not mean an armed despotism in the North-East and multiparty democracy elsewhere.
He pointed that Sri Lanka must insist upon a democratic, pluralist, de-militarized federalism not in stages but as it comes into existence and as conditions of its existence. Any attempt at hard-selling in the South, the combination of merger, Federalism, a fully armed LTTE, and Sri Lankan Army retrenchment from the North-east, will result in social upheaval which triggers Prabhakaran's trap.
He noted that after Mombassa, Kenya, President Bush called for the 'dismantling of the infrastructure of terrorism'. We cannot be faulted by the world, if, in exchange for Federalism, we insist upon no less from an organization which proudly put its Black Tiger suicide squads on parade just ten days ago, on its return from 'peace talks' in Oslo."
