திருக்குறளுக்கு விளக்கவுரைகள் எழுதியோர் பலர். ஆனால் எத்தனை பேருக்குக் குறளை முழுமையாகப் படிக்க முடிந்திருக்கிறது? நாம் திரைப்படப் பாடல்களை எவ்வாறு மனப்பாடம் செய்கிறோம்? பாட்டுப் புத்தகத்தை வாங்கியா படிக்கிறோம்? இல்லையே, கேட்பதனாலேயே பாடல்கள் நமக்கு மனதில் பதிகின்றன. அதனைப் போலவே பலவிதமான பாடல்களும் நாம் கேட்பதன்மூலமாகவே நன்கு மனதில் பதிகின்றது. படிக்கும் வரிகளை மனதில் பதிப்பதும், மீண்டும் நினைவுபடுத்தி எடுப்பதும் சற்றே கடினம். ஆனால் கேட்கின்ற வரிகளைச் சுலபமாக நினைவில் ஏற்றிக் கொள்ளலாம், அதே போல மீண்டும் ஞாபகப்படுத்துவதும் சுலபம். குழந்தைகள் கற்பதற்கு வெகு முன்னமேயே கேட்கத் தொடங்கி விடுகின்றனர் என்பதையும் இங்கே குறிப்பிட வேண்டும். அதனாலேயே கற்றலின் கேட்டல் நன்று என்றார்கள். திருவள்ளுவரும் "செல்வத்துள் செல்வம் செவிச் செல்வம்" என்றார்.

அப்படிப் பார்க்கும்போது, எத்தனைத் தமிழ் நூல்களை நாம் இசை வடிவில் பதிவு செய்திருக்கிறோம்? தமிழ் நூல்களையும், இலக்கியங்களையும் பரப்ப முன்வரும் பலரும் அதனை ஏட்டிலும், எழுத்திலுமே பதிய முற்படுவதைக் காண்கிறோம். பத்திரிகையாக இருக்கட்டும், மின் பக்கங்களாக இருக்கட்டும் அவை பெரும்பாலும் எழுத்திலேயே முன்வைக்கப்படுகின்றன. மதுரைத் திட்டம் போன்றவை அரும்பெரும் முயற்சிகள். ஆனாலும் அவை இன்று எத்தனைத் தமிழர்களைச் சென்றடைந்திருக்கின்றன? கணினி இருந்தாலுமே அத்தகைய பக்கங்களை அடிக்கடி எடுத்துப் பார்க்கின்றோமா? அதே நேரத்தில்,திரைப்பாடல்களைப் பாருங்கள். அவை இசை வடிவில் வந்ததனாலேயே புகழ்பெறுகின்றன. இசையின் மூலமே நல்ல பல இலக்கியங்களை மக்கள் மத்தியில் பரப்ப இயலும். இந்த நோக்கில் தொடங்கப்பட்டதுதான் எங்களது பனைநிலத் தமிழ்ச் சங்கத்தின் திருக்குறளை இசைவடிவில் பதியும் திட்டம்.

The CD contains a selection of 35 couplets in music composed by Rangasami Parthasarathy.

The singers include Dr.Seergazhi G. Siva Chidambaram, Deepan Chakravarthi, R.Krishnaraj with Dr.M. Balamurali Krishna as Guest Artist. Each selected couplet is sung ten times and hearing them in this fashhion is an effective way of memorising them. The Compact Disc package includes the text of the selected 35 Kurals in Tamil, English transliteration and English translation. Rangasami Parthasarathy writes in his introduction:

"Thirukkural - Thiru meaning sacred or beautiful and Kural being anything short or brief, was written 2000 years ago by Thiruvalluvar. It is divided into three parts and 133 chapters, each chapter contains 10 couplets and each couplet is a taut 14 syllable two liner, offering advice or admonition. Thirukkural has remained a "LIVING SCRIPTURE" precisely because each two liner is worth savoring, pondering over and is certainly relevant to any society - yesterday's, today or tomorrow's. It is one of those rare works meaningful to any reader or listener whether that person is a ruler or the ruled, businessman or professional, employer or employed, housewife or student.

We know for certain that the author Thiruvalluvar lived in what today is called "Chennai" a city in Tamilnadu, India. We also know that he lived in harmony with his wife Vasuki and was one of those rare great men who "practiced what they preached" .

I have attempted to provide a " Taste of Thirukkural " by selecting 35 couplets and setting it to music. The task was awesome and the problem was not what to select but what to leave out. In the ultimate analysis the 35 selected are my personal favorites and in my opinion valid in the contemporary world to which we belong.

You, the connoisseur of music will note that while the individual couplets are in different Ragas (modes) and in different pitch the "Swaras" (notes) are the same. This special innovation is my homage and tribute to the great sage THIRUVALLUVAR.

The Chicago based  International Tamil Language Foundation ( ITLF) has produced a 2-volume (CD), 2.5 hours long, of the music of Thirukkural - Kaamathuppaal. The 25 chapters of Kaamathuppaal are set to 25 different ragas by composer Pukazhenthi (K. V. Mahadevan group), and sung by S. P. Balasubramaniam & Chithra.

The songs are set as a musical drama of love that Valluvar picturised more than two-thousand years ago. The essence of the ten kurals of each chapter is contained in each song (lyrics by late Kavignar Pu. Aa. Muthukkrishnan).

The music was digitally recorded in Chennai and produced in USA, as one of the projects of ITLF. It is available in a 2-CD set with two booklets, (i) entire lyrics in Tamil (20 pages), and (ii) An article "Tamil Isai", by Vi. Pa. Kaa. Sundaram (32 pages).
