One Hundred Tamils of the 20th Century
N.Sabaratnam
"N.Sabaratnam was born in Karainagar Jaffna, on
5th December 1913. He had his early education at Victoria
College, Chulipuram and later at Jaffna Hindu College.
After obtaining his London B.A degree, he was a teacher for some
time at the Karainagar Hindu College. He then had his
Post-Graduate training and obtained Diploma in Education with
distinction.
He was President of the Northern Province Teachers' Association
in 1954-55, when he worked hard for teachers' rights. Later he
held the distinguished post of President, All Ceylon Union of
Teachers in 1958 -59.
He functioned as Vice-Principal Karainagar Hindu College for a
few years before being appointed Vice-Principal Jaffna Hindu
College. He was appointed Principal in 1962, which post he
successfully held till his retirement in 1971. After retirement
he continued to serve the community functioning as Editor of the
Tarnil daily newspaper Eelanadu.
He was a man of high intellect, a well respected teacher, an
efficient kind-hearted principal, an ebullient journalist and a
good speaker. His talks on "Hindu thoughts of the day" on Radio
Ceylon in the mornings, were always captivating. He passed away
on 22nd November 1992." (from S.Arumugam's

" N.Sabaratnam, as Vice president of All Ceylon Union of Teachers during the fifties. In that capacity he represented Ceylon at International Conferences of Teachers in India and traveled extensively in Europe. During the last decade of his term of office he served as Principal of Jaffna Hindu College. I was in the first class he took at JHC when he commenced teaching English in 1962 in his capacity as vice-principal. As a Principal his Friday sermons had always new wisdom injected with all the seriousness of real life experiences. One was about a brilliant engineer but a failure in married life. After retirement, his journalistic skills were put to good use by the then Eelanadu as Editor His autobiography has been published after his untimely death titled 'Corridors of Peace'. He must have read ,Corridors of Power by C.P.Snow,1959 "
