The Demand for Dravida Nadu (1938 to 1944)
in Tamil Renaissance and Dravidian Nationalism -
Professor K.Nambi Arooran, Madurai Kamraj
University "...the Justice Party
Confederation in which E.V.R. put forward his demand
for a separate Tamilnad was held at Madras in December
1938.... (Later) The Justice Party was renamed the
Dravidar Kazhagam at a conference held in Salem in
September 1944, when the demand for Dravidanad was
given substance and a definite scheme for establishing
the new state was put forward...The creation of
Dravidanad as a separate sovereign state continued to
be the main object of the Dravidar Kazhagam and its
offshoot the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (founded in
1949) till 1963 when the Indian Constitution was
amended specially to make a demand for secession a
criminal act, and since then the demand was given

Caste, nationalism, and ethnicity : an
interpretation of Tamil cultural history and social
order - Jacob Pandian "...Among the Tamils,
Tamil language is the emblem of Tamil
ethnic identity. ...although language constitutes the
single most characteristic feature of a separate ethnic
identity...ethnicity is frequently related more to the
symbol of a separate language
than to its actual use by all
members of a group... Tamil language functions as the
emblem of Tamil identity because of
the existence of the various symbols of boundaries in
Tamil culture...... it is the use of the symbols
of chenthamil, karppu, and tamilakam which enables the denotation
of Tamil language as the emblem of Tamil collective
identity..." |

What Caused
Veerappan? "...The
States Reorganisation in 1956 led
to the marginalisation of Tamils in the areas, which
were acceded to from the erstwhile Madras Presidency
to the new-found Greater Mysore. The city of
Bangalore, which itself was founded by a Tamil of
Vanniyar caste, Kempe Gownden, from
lr near
Knchipuram in 1537, was
predominantly Tamil in its demographic composition.
Kollegal, which was largely Tamil, was acceded to
Greater Mysore, as Chittoor district was annexed to
Andhra Pradesh and the huge Idikki district to
Kerala...."

Human Development in
Tamil Nadu - Lalitha Sridhar, 2003 ""...Says
Professor M. S. Swaminathan, the
countrys legendary agricultural
scientist named by TIME magazine as one of the twenty
most influential Asians of the 20th century,
25-26% of our population are
chronically undernourished, what we call endemic
hunger, the lack of adequate sustenance. This is not
because there isnt enough food. You
have a large variety of food available in the market,
provided you have the money to buy it. So the key
question, why dont we have the money?
Because there are no jobs. This is the job famine. The
livelihood famine... |

Tamil Nadu - தமிழ்
நாடு
- an estimated 65 million Tamils live in Tamil Nadu -
"Tamil Nadu's
population stood at 62,110,839 as of 00.00 hours of
March 1, 2001. It is the sixth most populous State
of the Indian Union behind Uttar Pradesh,
Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.
The State accounts for 6.05 % of the country's
population. Its population density at 478 persons
per square kilometre, up from 429 in 1991, and much
higher than the all-India density of 324, makes it
the eleventh most densely populated State (1991
rank:10) . Approximately 47% of Tamil Nadu's
population live in urban areas, one of the highest
percentages in India.During the decade 1991-2001,
Tamil Nadu reported the second lowest decadal
growth in population after Kerala, among the group
of States with population exceeding 20 million in
2001. While Kerala's population grew by 9.42 %
between 1991 and 2001, Tamil Nadu's grew by 11.19
%. In fact, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Orissa are the
only three States in this group to have shown a
decline in decadal percentage change in population
in every decade since 1971."
