I am happy to inform you that the State Level Task Force on Information Technology of the Government of Tamil Nadu under the Chairmanship of the Hon'ble Chief Minister, Dr. M. Karunanidhi, have decided to host an International Conference & Seminar on the use of Tamil in InformAtion Technology styled as "TamilNet 99" at Chennai on the 7th and 8th of February, 1999. The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu will preside.

The Agenda for the Conference will consist of:

1. Encoding of Tamil scripts
2. Standardization of Tamil Key Board
3. Future prospects for the use of Tamil in Multimedia and Internet

It is proposed to invite internationally recognized experts to stimulate extensive discussion on the above topics...

Proposals are invited on topics 1 and 2 above, namely, encoding of tamil scripts and standardization of tamil key board. Preferably, such proposals should have already been developed and successfully implemented, or be in the process of development and implementation.

For topic 3 above, papers are invited indicating the future prospects for the use of Tamil in Multimedia and Internet. These papers may suggest concrete scemes for further consideration and development and may indicate what is expected from each of us in this regard.

The proposals and papers may preferably be within 5 pages in A4 size paper and should reach the organizers not later than 18th January 1999. These may also be sent by email or floppy disks to the following address:
