Sri Lanka's Genocidal War - '95 to '01
Hindu temples attacked...
The All Ceylon Hindu Congress in a statement issued in Colombo on 27 January 1998 said
"It is with immense pain of mind that we have come to know that 24 divine statues if
Kandy Sri Selva Vinayagar Kovil have been damaged by hooligans on Sunday January 25, and
the divine chariot of Kurunduvatte Sri Muthumariamman Kovil was also burnt on the same
day".
"We strongly condemn these incidents and call upon the government to take necessary
action to pay sufficient compensations to the management of these temples for restoration
work."
The statement also referred to the destruction and damages to a number of temples and
other religious and places of worships during the military action in the north and east.
It went on to say "We might add that most of these still remain unrepaired, and not
restored to their original condition. In fact devotees are not allowed to go to some
Kovils" (Press Statement by the All Ceylon Hindu Congress
President Mr. V. Kailasapillai and e General Secretary Mr. Kandiah Neelakandan.-
