International Educational Development at UN
Commission on Human Rights, March 2006, "United States has substantial interests in Sri Lanka, especially as the
United States seeks to expand its role and power in Asia...Understanding
the interests of the United States in the Tamil areas of Sri Lanka goes a
long way to explaining the United States’ overt actions in relation to the
conflict in Sri Lanka, the most prominent being its harsh rhetoric against
the Tamils and their leadership under the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
(LTTE)..." more |

US based think tank Stratfor, 14 July 2004
"...The plan is to
destabilize the Tigers, bait the group into confrontation
and ultimately launch an offensive aimed at destroying the
fractured Tamil movement once and for all," the analysts at
Strategic Forecasting (Stratfor) said quoting unnamed
sources inside the Sri Lankan government....Colombo probably
hopes a renewed guerrilla war will be tempered by internal
struggles and that, once weakened, the Tigers can be
destroyed, the US analysts said....According to the US
analysts, in the event of a renewed war “the Tigers will
likely end up weaker - perhaps no longer in a position to
make the demands for autonomy that helped cause the internal
strife in the first place.” |

Conclusion by Human Rights Watch... |
"...LTTE’s use of intimidation, harassment, extortion, and even
physical violence against members of the Tamil diaspora is
effectively stifling Tamil dissent regarding
ongoing
LTTE human rights abuses in Sri Lanka...." Conclusion of Jo Becker, sometime
Washington Post journalist and currently Human Rights Watch
Advocate, Human Rights Watch Report entitled , "Funding
the 'Final War' LTTE Intimidation and Extortion in the
Tamil Diaspora" 14 March 2006

Who is Human Rights Watch?... |
|
From the Human Rights Watch Website
-
" Around 150 professionals work for Human Rights Watch
around the world. They are lawyers, journalists, academics,
and country experts. Human Rights Watch is the largest human
rights organization based in the United States. ... Human Rights Watch started in
1978 as Helsinki Watch, to monitor the compliance of Soviet
bloc countries with the human rights provisions of the
landmark Helsinki Accords. ..To maintain our independence, we do not accept
financial support from any government or government-funded
agency. We depend entirely on contributions from private
foundations and from individuals like you..."
Note by tamilnation.org
It
will be helpful
if Human Rights Watch adopted a more transparent approach to its
funding sources and declared the identity of all the
private foundations and individuals
who fund it. This is particularly important not only because
HRW holds itself out as an 'independent human rights
organisation' without a political agenda, but also because unlike Amnesty International, HRW is
not a mass membership organisation. It will also be helpful
if HRW discloses the way in which its Directors and
Executive officers are chosen - whether they are elected or
appointed - and by whom. Those outside HRW will then be able
to judge for themselves the extent, if any, of the direct or
indirect influence that US government agencies and US
foreign policy, may have on
the approaches adopted by Human Rights Watch from the days
when it was Helsinki Watch and monitored the compliance
of Soviet bloc countries with the human rights provisions of
the Helsinki Accords. The case of the writer Stephen Spender and the
funding of the
British opinion magazine Encounter
is one of many that come to mind.
