Thaya Idaikadar, a British citizen of Sri Lankan origin, began a hunger strike at 12 PM, June 2, 2006 outside the Houses of Parliament, in a bid to draw attention to the plight of his fellow Tamils amid the deteriorating security situation in Sri Lanka.

"I have been driven to take this desperate measure because of the continuing violence against Tamil civilians by the Sri Lankan military. So many ordinary people have been murdered by state security forces," he said. "There is absolute impunity in Sri Lanka and total silence from the international community, including Britain, my home," he said.

"The international community must insist Sri Lanka acts like a responsible state and end the flagrant abuse of human rights. Britain must take a lead in this, I feel."

Mr. Idaikadar, 55, is married with two children. He was recently re-elected as a Councillor in the London Borough of Harrow. As a heavily insulin-dependent diabetic this hunger strike could be particularly dangerous for him. He will be attended by a team of doctors working in shifts throughout his vigil. He is well aware of the risks to which he is exposing himself but believes that it is vital to get attention focused on the unfolding disaster.

Hundreds of supporters including local councillors and community leaders are visiting the scene of Thaya's hunger strike to express solidarity with his protest.

Thaya is alert and is expected to continue his protest for 101 hours.

Many thanks for your e-mail. I was full of energy throughout the hunger strike. With that many well-wishers around me and the knowledge that people are praying for me all over the world, it is difficult to feel any other way. Now looking back two things were major inconvenience:

Sleeping rough in the freezing cold weather.
The consequences of all the water I drank. The loo was very difficult to get to and cost 50p! Towards the end the attendant got to know about the cause and refused to accept money.
Now I am on my own, the pain hit me like a ton of bricks. However, I am feeling very healthy and thinking about the next project.

A very special thank you for the Canadian Tamils and the media for praying for me and donating blood. I hope to meet you all when I am in Canada, next time.

I was never emotionally touched before. Difficult to describe my feelings when people were hugging me and crying.

However, one thing for certain. Compared to the efforts and sacrifices of my sisters and brothers, my efforts are nothing. To just compare, they are like mountains and I AM JUST LIKE A SPECK OF DUST AT THE BOTTOM OF IT.

முப்பத்தி ஐயாயிரம் தமிழ் மக்கள் பங்கேற்று உணர்ச்சி பூர்வமாக கடந்த திங்கட்கிழமை நடந்தேறிய உரிமைக்குரல் நிகழ்வு சொன்ன செய்திகளை சக கனேடிய சமூகங்களும் உள்வாங்கி இருப்பமையினால், நாளைய சர்வமத பிரார்த்தனைக்குப் பெருவாரியான கனேடிய சமூகங்கள் உடனடி ஒப்புதல் அளித்துள்ளனர். அத்தோடு, இவ்வழிபாடுகளில் பங்கு கொள்ளும் பல்லின பக்தர்களிற்கும் அவரவர்களின் தாய் மொழியில் ஈழத்தமிழரின் அவலங்கள் பற்றி விளக்கவிருப்பதாகவும் இம்மதத் தலைவர்கள் வாக்களித்துள்ளனர்.
