The Centre for South Asian Studies of the University of Toronto and the University of Windsor will jointly host an interdisciplinary Tamil Studies Conference in Toronto from May 31-June 2, 2007.

The disciplines represented range from Anthropology, Archaeology, Diaspora Studies, History, Linguistics, Literature, Political Studies, Psychology, Public Health, Religion, Sociology and Theatre Studies.

This conference will bring together Tamil Studies scholars from North America, Europe, South Asia, and Australasia.

Over 40 scholars from universities including Columbia University, University of California (Berkeley), Massey University (New Zealand), French Institute of Pondicherry, McGill University, University of Toronto, University of Batticaloa and the University of Peradeniya will participate in this important conference.

Toronto is now home to one of the largest Tamil diasporas and the annual conferences are a part of the efforts being undertaken to develop a Tamil Studies program in Toronto. Please see www.tamilstudies.org  for a complementary project.

தொறொன்ரோ பல்கலைக்கழகம்

தொறொன்ரோ பல்கலைக்கழகமும் வின்சர் பல்கலைக்கழகமும் இணைந்து நடத்தும் இரண்டாவது தமிழியல் மாநாடு “இனத்துவப் புனைவுகள்: மாற்றம், தொடர்ச்சி, முரண்” என்ற தலைப்பில் ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளது. தென்னாசிய கற்கைகளுக்கான நிறுவனத்தில் மே மாதம் 31ம் திகதி முதல் ஜூன் 2ம் திகதி வரை மாநாடு இடம்பெறவுள்ளது.

புலம்பெயர் தமிழர்கள் மிக அதிக அளவில் வாழும் நகரங்களில் ஒன்றாகத் தற்போது தொறொன்ரோ விளங்குகிறது. ஆண்டுதோறும் நடைபெறவுள்ள இந்த மாநாடு, தமிழியல் கற்கைகளுக்கான ஓரு முக்கிய நகராகவும் தொறொன்ரோவை உருவாக்கி வருகிறது.

இந்த ஆண்டின் மாநாட்டுக் கட்டுரைகள், தமிழ் வழங்கும் இடங்களது வரலாற்றின் ஒட்டுமொத்த அடையாளம், சமூகத் தொடர்பு, அகழ்வாராய்ச்சி ஆய்வுகள், பண்டை இலக்கியங்கள், இடைக்கால சமய வழமைகள், “தேசியமும்” இக்காலப் புரிதல்களும் எழுச்சியும் போன்றவற்றை தற்கால தென்னிந்தியா, ஈழத்தின் சமூக மற்றும் பண்பாட்டு அடையாள மாற்றங்கள் வழியாக ஆய்வு செய்கின்றன. அத்துடன் கனடா, ஐரோப்பா, அவுஸ்திரேலியா ஆகிய இடங்களில் வாழும் புலம்பெயர் தமிழ்ச் சமூகங்களின் வளர்ச்சியையும் பண்பாட்டு வழமைகளையும் கட்டுரைகள் ஆராய்கின்றன.

அவுஸ்திரேலியா, கனடா, இந்தியா, மலேசியா, நியூசிலாந்து, இலங்கை அமெரிக்காவைச் சேர்ந்த 40க்கும் மேற்பட்ட கல்வியாளர்கள் இந்த மாநாட்டில் கட்டுரைகள் படைக்கின்றனர். மானுடவியல், தொல்லியல், புலம்பெயர் கல்வி, வரலாறு, மொழியியல், இலக்கியம், அரசியல், உளவியல், பொது சுகாதாரம், சமயம், சமூகவியல், அரங்கக் கல்வி ஆகிய துறைகளைச் சேர்ந்த பேராளர்கள் மாநாட்டில் பங்கேற்கின்றனர்.

Call for Papers  31 May - 2 June 2007

The conference organizers, therefore, invite scholars to submit research papers about the history of the formation, elaboration, transformation, interpretation and contestation of collectives and identities within the Tamil speaking regions of Southern India, Sri Lanka and the Diaspora throughout history and in our scholarly disciplines.  Scholars are invited to explore this theme through the following questions:  Can one speak of "Tamilness", "Tamil nation," "Tamil identity," or even "Tamil region" outside the discursive framework of Tamil nationalism?  What alternative constructs would better frame the history of Tamil collectives, persons and regions? Or are there continuities in forms, practices and ideologies of Tamil collectives, persons and regions? 

The organizers welcome papers and panel proposals that address the following non-exhaustive list of possible topics:  

• State formation, ideologies of kingship and trade networks and the structuring of Tamil collectives.
• Artistic productions and performance traditions in forming and challenging collectives.
• Constructing "Tamilness" or Tamil collectives in relation to multilingual communities and literary networks.
• The continuities and transformations of caste in structuring Tamil collectives.
• Religious movements' conceptualization, appropriation or subversion of "Tamilness".
• Tamil nationalism and the study of history, literature, religion and social formations in the Tamil regions.
• Literary imaginings of Tamilness and nationalist reclamations of literature.

• Colonialism and resistance. The impact of colonial practices and disciplines in the development of Tamil nationalism.
• History, historiography and tradition. 
• Nationalism, space, and landscape.
• Print and Media: books, newspapers, radio, cinema, television and the internet.
• Gendering Tamilness and feminist contestations of the nation.
• Rationality, the secular and the scientific in the Tamil nation.
• Location of caste and religion in the Tamil nation including: comparative treatments of the divergent place of caste and religion in nationalist projects in Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu.
• Multiple Diasporas: Colonial labour, immigrants, refugees and transnationals.
• Diasporic States: Imagining "homelands," and transnational communities.
• Tamils without Tamil?
• Pedagogy and language studies: Language retention, teaching and learning.

 Paper proposals   

v     A 300 word abstract stating the argument to be presented. 

v     A one paragraph biographical statement, including: current affiliation, publications and research interests.  Please note that this will be the        biographical information used in conference publicity and introductions.  

v     Abstracts can be submitted in English or Tamil depending on which language panel you wish to participate in. The conference will include panels in English and Tamil. 

v     The abstracts will be evaluated by a committee on whose recommendations the participants will be selected.   

v     All abstracts must be received by September 30, 2006 at the latest.  Please send abstracts to tamilstudiesconference@gmail.com 

v     The organizers welcome submissions from non-Tamil specialists whose work addresses the theme of this conference.  The conference is also open to graduate students. 

Financial Support 

All presenters are expected to meet their own transport costs, accommodation charges and registration fee.  Presenters can stay in either University of Toronto student hostels for approximately $25 per day or in local hotels for approximately $120 per day.  The registration fee, $85, will cover the costs of all the meals which will be provided during the duration of the conference.
